This used Thompson Center RENEGADE .54 caliber percussion rifle was originally a kit. The black walnut stock has scattered handling marks. The color case hardened lock and barrel have a dark brown aged patina with scattered speckling. The bore has been recut by Robert Hoyt to a .54 caliber. The bore is bright and has been well maintained. Trigger reach is 13-7/8" and the weight is 7.9 pounds, making the rifle set up for today's average size shooter.

Originally a .50 caliber the barrel still has the original markings on the breech. The bore has been cut by Robert Hoyt to a .54 caliber. The bore is bright, and has been well maintained. The barrel is fitted with a patridge blade front sight, painted orange on the face for visibility, and square notch adjustable rear sight for windage and elevation. We recommend our #BALL-530 Hornady pure lead .530" round ball, #OX-18-50-W Ox Yoke .018" lubricated patch, and 70 grains of #GOEX-FFg black powder for best accuracy. I

Our front view shows the American black walnut stock. The stock was from a kit and does have some extra wood in a few areas. The stock has some scattered handling marks from use. The blued steel buttplate is wide and nearly flat to spread the recoil from the .54 caliber bore over a large area. The wide trigger bow has ample room for the double lever, double set triggers. The wooden ramrod is fitted with blued steel tips threaded to accept 10-32 cleaning and loading accessories.

Our top view shows the hooked breech that allows the barrel to be dismounted for cleaning. To dismount the barrel, place the lock at half cock, withdraw the ramrod, remove the single wedge key located forward and below the barrel. Use a small brass drift, such as our #TOOL-KEY-B. Once the key is removed, lift the barrel from the muzzle to unhook the breech from the tang. Remove the nipple and place the breech end of the barrel in a bucket of soapy water. Run a wet patch down and up the bore, the pumping action will flush all the fouling from the barrel. Once the bore is clean, run a dry patch down the bore to pick up any moisture followed by a oily patch. Dry and oil the exterior then reassemble the rifle.

Our color hardening on the lock has aged to a dark brown patina. This lock works smoothly, with a strong mainspring, and fly detent to allow the use of double set triggers. The breech on this rifle is fitted with a 1/4-28 stainless steel nipple. Correctly adjusted, you may cock the lock, or set the trigger, in any sequence. Turn the tiny set trigger adjustment screw, between the two triggers, inboard to reduce the set trigger release tension. Or turn it fully inboard, to disable the set trigger feature, when hunting in very cold climates, where a numb finger might release the light set trigger too early. When training youngsters, we prefer to start with the set trigger disabled.
